A Place for Creative Work: International Actions
15 November 2006
Tate Modern, London
Finding the right space to work as an artist or creative practitioner is still a challenge for many. This conference brings together people from Europe and the Americas who are involved in delivering innovative and successful responses to this challenge.
Come and find out how others do it, and participate in workshop sessions that will look at some of the detail and practical issues involved.
Current speakers are as follows:
  • Will Law, Chief Financial Officer of Artspace USA – "America's leading non-profit real estate developer for the arts" – with the aim to create, foster and preserve affordable space for artists and arts organizations, through development projects, asset management activities, consulting services, and community-building activities
  • Tim Jones, Director of Artscape in Canada – Artscape is a non-profit enterprise that builds creative communities and expands knowledge about the dynamics of creative places. Artscape’s work encompasses building creative places, developing creative districts & clusters, and cultivating creative cities
  • Andrew Bullen, Director of the Media Guild in Amsterdam, The Netherlands – the Media Guild aims to stimulate the innovation potential of ICT and multimedia creative industries by bringing together, coaching and enabling talented starters, young entrepreneurs and established professionals to develop and prototype their ideas.
  • Lluís Noguera, Co-ordinator of La Fabrica in Catalonia, Spain - a project overseen by Granollers City Council to convert the Roca Umbert factory complex, an area of 20,000 m2 in the city centre, into a centre for the "production, training and dissemination of artistic creation"
  • Natasa Serec, from Metelkova in Ljubljana, Slovenia –an internationally renowned autonomous cultural zone situated on the site of former military barracks – the Slovene headquarters of the Yugoslav National Army – and recently threatened with demolition by "the authorities"
  • Serhan Ada, Director of Santral in Istanbul, Turkey - a project involving the conversion of the Ottoman Empire’s first power station - Silahtarağa Power Plant - into a range of cultural facilities, including workspaces
  • Donald Hyslop, Director of Community Affairs for Tate Modern
  • David Panton, Co-Director of ACME Studios in London which aims to support fine art practice by providing artists with affordable studio and living space
  • Keith Hackett, freelance consultant and someone who has "put their money where their mouth is" by personally investing in a number of creative workspace projects - Keith was also the presenter of EUCLID's recent round of seminars on the challenges and opportunities for creative workspaces
  • Dave Clarke, Director of DCA Associates, who are working with Arts Council England on the "Inhabit" strand of their new "Artists Insights" programme which aims to unlock artists' professional potential and develop the arts throughout England to the benefit of everyone
This conference is aimed at both artists and creative practitioners and those whose work involves helping to provide the environment for artists and creative practitioners to work and flourish. If you work for an arts or cultural funding agency, for a local authority, for a regeneration or development agency, or for any other body that seeks to support creative practice, then this conference is for you.
